Eyelid Aesthetics (Blepharoplasty)

Blepharoplasty is elimination of wrinkles, sagging and bagging of the lower and/or upper eyelids resulting from aging and sun damage. In addition to providing a more youthful look, it may also improve the decreased upper vision caused by obstruction by the sagging upper eyelids.

Technically, blepharoplasty procedure consists of removal of excess skin and herniated fat pads inside the eyelids using incisions just below the eyelashes in the lower eyelids and at the natural crease above the eyelashes on the upper eyelids. In the lower eyelids, if the main problem is bagging without skin sagging, the procedure may also be performed using incisions inside the lower eyelids.

Duration of the procdure is 1-2 hours and may be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with intravascular sedation. Hospital stay is not required. Return to work is in about 1 week. Sports and exercises may be started in about 3 weeks. Eyeglasses can be used after 2-3 days and contact lenses after 2-3 weeks.

Main risks of the procedure are temporary blurred vision and double vision, dryness of the eyes, asymmetry, bleeding, infection and very rarely blindness.
