Breast Reduction
Breast reduction is reshaping of large and sagging breasts
by removal of excess breast tissue. Since it also relieves back, neck and shoulder pains caused by large breasts, it is also considered a reconstructive procedure. Surgical breast reduction may also be used in men with large breasts (gynecomastia) when they can not be treated by lesser treatments such as suctioning of the breast tissue by liposuction.
Technically, breast reduction procedure consists of removal
of excess breast tissue using an incision around the nipple and extending below or at the fold under the breast, at the same time, reshaping and lifting the breasts and the nipples.
Duration of the operation is about 3-4 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. Hospital stay may not be required or one night stay suffices. Return to work is in about 1-2 weeks. Sports and physical activities requiring close contact may be started in about 4-6 weeks.
Main risks of the procedure are bleeding under the skin, infection, asymmetry, inability to breast-feed, decrease of sensation, skin or nipple damage and distinct scarring.
