Skin Resurfacing with Chemical Peels
It is the treatment of surface wrinkles, color changes (pigmentation) and damages of sun rays by using glycolic acid, TCA (trichlorasticeacid) or phenol solutions. Use is made of glycholic acid in the treatment of surface, of TCA in the medium depth and of Phenol in the deeper wrinkles.
Technically after applying TCA and phenol solutions on the skin, they make possible the upper layers of the skin to peel and fall in time in a controlled manner. On the other hand glycolic acid after having been rubbed on the skin provides the upper most layer of the skin to remain healthy through its effect as known mini peel and its care, it does not cause the skin to peel.
The duration of the attempt is 20-40 minutes for TCA and phenol approximately. It is applied in the physicians’ office and does not require anesthesia, if required sedative drugs can be utilized. EKG monitor can be used in phenol application. The peeling and the formation of the new layer and going back to work gets completed in 5-10 days, after TCA application and 7-21 days after phenol application. The pinkness on the face can go on for 1-3 days after the glycolic acid and after phenol for 3-6 months. Instead glycolic acid application takes 3-5 minutes and can be returned to normal activities right after. The glycolic acid is applied in 7-14 day intervals and can be repeated once every 3-6 months.
Main risks are infection and allergy, sensitivity to sun and make-up materials, the reappearance of past herpes, color (pigmentation) changes, sometimes scars which can be permanent and seldom met heart rhythm disorders.
